Cargo at Kennedy

JFK continues as one of the world's leading international
air cargo centers. With more than one million square feet of office
and warehouse space dedicated to broker, freight forwarder and container
freight station operators who do business within the NY/NJ region,
JFK's cargo handling capacity continues to expand. The Port Authority
and Continental Cargo celebrated the grand opening of a new $25
million cargo facility at Kennedy International in May, 2002.This
state-of-the-art building expedites the shipments of various freight
operations that were previously housed in separate buildings.
The Airis Corporation is also building a new $25 million
facility that will house a 278,000 square-foot cargo warehouse and
38,100 square feet of office space. And in recognition of its expanding,
modern cargo services, Kenedy International was named the best cargo
airport in North America in the 16th Annual Asian Freight Industry
awards survey conducted by Cargonews Asia, the region's leading
freight industry publication.
Although there still remains a decline in air cargo
in the New York/New Jersey region due to the worldwide recession,
the War with Iraq and the aftereffects of September 11, air cargo
is poised to make a strong comeback as the industry recovers. And
with new modern facilities for United Airlines, Continental Airlines,
Korean Air, and the Airis Corporation, JFK's leadership role in
the air cargo industry will only be strengthened in years to come.
The region's biggest and busiest air cargo airport easily accommodates long-haul direct and non-stop international/transcontinental traffic. Located on Jamaica Bay in Queens, New York, the airport is just seven miles from LaGuardia, twenty miles from Newark International and fifteen miles from downtown Manhattan.
