Facts About FTZ 49
  • The Port Authority of New York & New Jersey is the Grantee for FTZ No. 49, which was established in 1979 and today comprises 3,587 acres.
  • FTZ 49 is one of the largest contiguous foreign-trade zones in the United States.
  • FTZ 49 received $3.9 billion in foreign merchandise during fiscal year 2007 while the subzones handled $8.5 billion. Total merchandise received and forwarded were $7.9 billion in the general purpose zone and $16.9 billion in the subzones, for a grand total of $24.8 billion.
  • Among the current FTZ 49 users are motor vehicle importers, auto processors, multiple-use warehouse operators, and a frozen orange juice concentrate importer.
  • FTZ 49 also sponsors seven active subzone operators involved in manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, petroleum products, specialty chemicals, fragrances, and a watch importer/distributor.
  • FTZ 49 provides direct employment for 9,913 people, while indirect employment represent several times that number for suppliers and service providers in the communities it serves.
