Existing Port Newark/Elizabeth Terminals

At the beginning the the Port Redevelopment Project, four separate container terminals were located at the Port Newark/Elizabeth Marine Terminal complex: the Port Newark Container Terminal on the north side of the Elizabeth Channel; Maher Fleet Street and Maher Tripoli Street terminals, two distinct operations separated by the ExpressRail terminal and the vacant Bay Avenue Terminal; and Maersk Sealand's consolidated terminal on the former Sealand Terminal site. Between 2001 and 2004, the Port Authority plans to consolidate Maher's two separate operations into a 445-acre single terminal, and expand the Maersk Sealand operation from 266 to 350 acres, while constructing a new, expanded ExpressRail on-dock rail terminal at 72 acres.

Each terminal operator will be making significant investments as well -- in new container cranes, gate systems, reinforced and deeper berths.
