1. What is the difference between the regular SmartLink Card and the Limited-Use SmartLink Gray Card which is no longer being sold?

The regular SmartLink Card is a refillable, durable, plastic PATH fare card. It has an embedded computer chip that keeps track of the number of available prepaid trips, as well as the number of trips remaining on an unlimited pass. The SmartLink Card is intended for long-term use and products loaded onto the card do not expire.

SmartLink Gray was a non-refillable paper version of our plastic SmartLink Card. SmartLink Gray did not offer the many electronic features of the regular SmartLink Card, such as balance protection, online account management, or online purchases.

2. I currently use a plastic SmartLink Card (the original, green, SmartLink Card or Super Bowl Edition, blue, SmartLink Card). Do I need to switch to a different fare option?

No. The SmartLink Gray Card Elimination only applied to the paper, non-refillable, Limited-Use SmartLink Gray Cards. The plastic SmartLink Cards do not need to be replaced.

3. I currently use a paper Limited-Use SmartLink Gray Card. Is it still being accepted?

4. Can I transfer the remaining balance on my Limited-Use SmartLink Gray Card to a new green SmartLink Card?

5. Can I use the paper voucher from my Transit Benefit Provider to add products to a green SmartLink Card?

No, you may not use the paper voucher to add products to the green SmartLink Card. You must use a debit/prepaid transit benefits card to add products to your new SmartLink Card online via the one-time replenishment feature or at a station vending machine, or sign up for a monthly electronic direct product load with your Commuter Benefit Provider.

Additionally, Commuter Benefits Prepaid Debit cards cannot be used to set up Automatic Replenishment for SmartLink Cards. This is due to the fact that your Commuter Benefits Prepaid Debit Card might not be funded in time for you to receive your PATH product load onto your SmartLink Card. However, PATH is working on a resolution to allow automatic replenishment with Commuter Benefits Prepaid Debit Cards in the future.
