John F. Kennedy International Airport: Ground Transportation

By Rail: AirTrain JFK
AirTrain JFK connects JFK with the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) and MTA subways and buses at Jamaica Station as well as with the MTA's A Train at Howard Beach Station.. The fare for AirTrain JFK is $5 each way (in addition to any LIRR and NYC Transit fares) when connecting between the airport and public transit. At the airport, AirTrain JFK provides fast, free connections between terminals, rental car facilities, hotel shuttle areas, and parking lots. Additional information on AirTrain JFK can be found here and a AirTrain JFK map can be found here.

By Public Bus
JFK is also served by the MTA's B15, Q3, and Q10 bus lines amongst others. More information on using public buses to travel to and from JFK can be found here or at the MTA’s website at

By Taxi
There are NYC taxi stands and dispatchers located just outside the arrivals areas of each terminal at JFK. In addition, numerous authorized private car and shared-ride companies serve JFK's customers. More information on taxis, private car and shared-ride services at JFK can be found here.

By Rental Car
We highly recommend reserving a car BEFORE arriving at JFK. However, if a guest has not reserved a car in advance of arriving at the airport, he or she may use the self-service telephones at our Welcome Centers (located in the arrivals area of each terminal) to contact the many car rental companies that serve the airport. More information on car rental at JFK can be found here.

By Car
There are two major access roads to/from JFK: the Van Wyck Expressway, which connects to the Grand Central Parkway and Long Island Expressway, and the JFK Expressway, which connects to the Belt Parkway.

Information on parking at JFK, including reserved parking in our short-term garages, can be found here.

For guests seeking to simply pick up or drop off passengers, JFK has two options: our Cell Phone Lot and our Kiss and Fly drop-off area. Both options provide a convenient, free way to pick up, drop off or wait for passengers.

Customer Care

For assistance, please visit one of our Welcome Centers (located in the arrivals area of each terminal) or see a red-jacketed Customer Care Representative.

JFK Vehicle Restrictions
Due to safety, traffic and security considerations, there are significant restrictions on the type and amount of vehicles that may enter the terminal area at JFK:

  •      There is a STRICT height restriction of 12’6” for all vehicles entering the terminal area. Any vehicle exceeding 12’6” may incur roof damage or need to backed off the road and will be subject to ticketing.
  •      Absolutely NO buses or trucks are permitted in JFK parking garages.  Some of our garages have low ceilings and some turns in our garages are not designed for vehicles with long wheelbases.
  •      Due to Federal security regulations, there is NO parking in front of or next to any of our terminals, or on airport roadways, for any reason, at any time. Unattended vehicles will be towed at owner's expense.
  •      In addition to height restrictions, JFK has very little linear space along its terminal curbs and roadways. These roadways can become extremely congested. Having buses or limos of any kind stop in these areas, even if just picking up and dropping off, will add to this congestion.
  •      Again, vehicles cannot be left unattended for any reason. Limo drivers coming to JFK should NOT expect to be allowed to park curbside and run inside “for a second” to meet their passengers. Limo drivers can park in the garage across the street from each terminal and then meet their passengers in arrivals, or use the Cell Phone Lot.

Charter Bus and Mini-Coach Guidelines
During the week of Super Bowl XLVIII, charter buses and mini-coaches are directed to follow the procedure below to quickly serve their customers and avoid terminal roadway congestion:

  •      All charter buses and mini-coaches will stage in the Charter Bus Staging Area located at the southernmost end of the Long-Term parking Lot located on Lefferts Boulevard (see map, below). Temporary signs will be in place directing you to this area. This area will be separated from the remainder of long-term parking and you can enter and exit this area as needed without parking fees. Once a group arrives, they and their respective bus/mini-coach should establish communication to advise that they have arrived. Once this is confirmed, the bus/mini-coach should leave the Charter Bus Staging Area and head to the Kiss and Fly to wait for their group. All arriving groups needing to board a bus/mini-coach will board the AirTrain JFK at their terminal and take the AirTrain JFK to Lefferts Boulevard, where they will disembark the train and head to ground level. (Note: there is no fare for using AirTrain JFK from the terminals to Lefferts Boulevard.) Once they are downstairs, they will follow signs to the Kiss and Fly area, where they will board their bus/mini-coach and depart the airport.

DROP-OFFS: Charter buses and mini-coaches may drop off their groups at the Kiss and Fly, where the groups can take the free AirTrain to their respective terminals.

Limousine and Livery Car Staging
Limousines and livery vehicles will be staged at the Cell Phone Lot. This lot has 373 spaces and is located five minutes from the terminal area. This lot is located just off the inbound Van Wyck Expressway at the entrance to JFK. A downloadable map showing directions to and from the Cell Phone Lot can be found here.
