An increasing number of people are discovering bicycling not only as a leisure-time activity with great health benefits, but also as a socially responsible and green commuting option. In keeping with our mission to meet the critical transportation needs of the bi-state region, The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey supports bicycling as an important and sustainable mode of travel. We seek to meet emerging demand by integrating improved bicycle access, safe bicycle lanes, and secure bicycle parking and storage into existing Port Authority buildings, roadways and other facilities owned or operated by the Port Authority.
The majority of the Port Authority's vehicle fleet is green, powered by hybrid-electric, plug-in electric, compressed natural gas (CNG) or E-85 ethanol. We've added 20 new hybrid-electric buses to the shuttle service at John F. Kennedy International Airport and now have 1,115 green vehicles, 65 percent of the entire fleet (excluding emergency equipment).
The Port Authority has also built fueling stations for hydrogen, CNG, and E-85 ethanol-powered vehicles. Plus, all of our diesel vehicles use B-20 biodiesel, which comprises 20 percent fuel from plant sources and 80 percent conventional diesel. Biodiesel is now available at all PA in-house fueling facilities.
