AirTrain Newark

The Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) Monorail Northeast Corridor Connection Program will provide a critical transportation link, allowing convenient rail access to the airport for passengers throughout the region, while reducing airport frontage roadway congestion. It will connect the existing EWR Monorail System to Amtrak's Northeast Corridor (NEC) enabling New Jersey Transit and Amtrak to service the airport via a new intermodal station.

The existing 1.9 mile on-airport Monorail system will be extended approximately one mile to the new Newark Liberty International Airport Station site. The extension will maintain the bi-directional, dual tracks (guideway) of the on-airport system and will utilize six additional trains to accommodate projected ridership levels, while maintaining the service intervals of the existing system.

The configuration of the station is defined by the interaction of the two transit modes--NEC rail operations of NJ Transit and Amtrak, and the Newark Liberty International Airport Monorail system. The new station will be one facility comprised of three major elements: the NEC station train platforms, the connecting concourse and the Monorail Station. Airport passengers will move from the NEC platforms to the overhead connecting concourse via stairs, escalators or elevators. They will then proceed across the connecting concourse and down to the center of the Monorail Station platform for monorail connecting service to the main airport Terminals A, B and C.
  • Concourse

The concourse (approximately 225 feet in length) will provide a connection between the NEC Station train platforms and the Monorail station platform. The concourse will be climate controlled and include facilities for train and airline information.

  • NEC Station Train Platforms

The two train platforms will each be 32 feet wide and 1050 feet long. They are being constructed between existing NEC tracks and newly added electrified siding tracks. Both platforms will include climate controlled waiting areas and restroom facilities.

  • Monorail Station

The new Monorail Station will include a climate controlled passenger platform on level two, and various system support services, such as train control rooms and station mechanical/electrical rooms on the ground level. Full service check-in and baggage handling facilities will be provided at the concourse level.
