The Work

These closures will allow PATH to replace all the systems in the tunnels between Exchange Place and WTC stations damaged by Superstorm Sandy. Based on the repairs implemented in 2014, PATH has been able to maintain these systems in operation. However, replacement of this damaged infrastructure, including power, radio and communications, lighting and rail, can no longer be deferred. The completion of this work will ensure that PATH has a robust, reliable, and up-to-date infrastructure in place for many years to come.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

1) Where can I get the ferry?

Jersey City: After collecting a round-trip ferry transfer ticket at Exchange Place Station, exit the station and make a right hand turn, following the Hudson River north. It is about a 4 to 5-minute walk to Harborside Ferry Landing. See "NJ → NY: Weekend travel from Exchange Place to World Trade Center" for route maps.

New York City: After collecting a round-trip ferry transfer ticket at World Trade Center Station, proceed through the West Concourse, through Brookfield Place to Brookfield Place Terminal located on the Hudson River. See "NY → NJ: Weekend Travel from World Trade Center to Exchange Place" for route maps.

3) How long will these World Trade Center Station weekend closures last?

The World Trade Center Station weekend closures will continue through December 2020, excluding major holidays.

4) Why is PATH disrupting service?

Superstorm Sandy caused massive flooding that decimated vital PATH signal and switch systems in 2012. At the World Trade Center site, corrosive salt water ruined much of the underground electrical and mechanical systems. To keep the system running, PATH initiated weekend closures and service adjustments in 2014.

The current repairs were deferred for installation of Positive Train Control, which need to be completed before the federally mandated deadline of December 2018. PTC installation required weekend PATH station closures in both 2016 and 2018, delaying the start of these Sandy-related tunnel repairs.

The permanent repair work is essential to providing a safer, more reliable and more efficient system for riders.
