Holland Tunnel Planned Weekly Construction

BAYONNE BRIDGE WEEKEND CLOSING STARTING TONIGHT; CROSSING WILL REOPEN BY 3 P.M. SUNDAY TO EXPEDITE FLOW OF SUMMER BEACH TRAFFIC

Date: Aug 25, 2017

Lane closings and service adjustments also planned at the George Washington Bridge and Holland Tunnel

This weekend, the Bayonne Bridge will be closed starting at 10 p.m. Friday, August 25 for construction activity, and will reopen by 3 p.m. Sunday, August 27. During the construction work, downtown Bayonne traffic will be diverted at 5th Street beginning 10 p.m. Friday and will revert back to Avenue A by 11:59 p.m. Saturday night.

Once the bridge reopens on Sunday afternoon, it is not scheduled to close again until the 7p.m.-5 a.m. overnight closure starting Monday, August 28 and ending the following morning. Overnight closures also will be in effect at the same time starting Tuesday night and running through Thursday. On certain mornings, the bridge will reopen by 4:30 a.m. for drivers affected by traffic holds on the Goethals Bridge.

The Port Authority also is planning the following lane closings at the George Washington Bridge and Holland Tunnel this weekend and/or next week for ongoing construction and repair projects.

George Washington Bridge:

  • Two upper-level westbound lanes of the GWB will be closed from 11 p.m. Friday, August 25, through 10 a.m. Saturday, August 26, and will close again from 10 p.m. Saturday, August 26 through 10 a.m. Sunday, August 27.

These closures are needed for the ongoing replacement of the PIP Helix -- which connects the Palisades Interstate Parkway to the George Washington Bridge -- and for repairs to the George Washington Bridge’s upper level over the New Jersey anchorage. More information can be found at http://www.panynj.gov/bridges-tunnels/restoring-the-george.html. These projects are part of the “Restoring the George” program of capital improvements at the world’s busiest bridge.

Holland Tunnel:

  • One westbound lane in the Holland Tunnel will close during overnight hours on Sunday, August 27 through Thursday, August 31 from 11:59 p.m. each night through 5:30 a.m. the following morning. These closures are necessary for ongoing tunnel repairs.
  • One eastbound lane in the Holland Tunnel will close during overnight hours on Sunday, August 2, through Thursday, August 31 from 11 p.m. each night through 5 a.m. the following morning for ongoing tunnel repairs.
