The century-old PATH system is gearing toward the future.
You will see changes on the rail line linking New Jersey and New York as part of PATH's major modernization program. First off, brand-new trains are entering service now, the start of an entire overhaul of the 340-car fleet. Improvements will range from nuts-and-bolts operational needs, like replacing antiquated track signals and hard-to-hear loudspeakers, to aesthetically pleasing improvements, like sprucing up stations. The Port Authority’s goals for its 24/7 around-the-clock rail service are simple: Increasing safety, reliability, communication and comfort at a reasonable fare. The bottom-line: creating a better traveling experience for more than 70 million riders annually, while increasing capacity by more than 20 percent.
Colorful murals featuring local landmarks have been installed at PATH stations.
