Bayonne Bridge "Raise the Roadway" Improvement Project OVERNIGHT LANE CLOSURES

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey has started construction on the Bayonne Bridge "Raise the Roadway" Project that will allow our region to welcome larger, more efficient vessels to its ports.

To complete this critically important project on time, overnight bridge closures will be required. Such overnight closures will begin on January 8, 2014, and continue through the duration of the project.

Please note: while the improved bridge will be open to larger vessels in 2015, motorists should expect roadway closures to continue through the project's completion date in 2017.

Overnight closure hours for January and February 2014 are listed below. This schedule may change in subsequent months.

To receive the notification of schedule updates, visit our website at panynj.gov/bayonnebridge, and sign up for email alerts.

  • Monday through Thursday from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m., and Friday midnight to 8 a.m. Saturday
  • No weekend closures on Saturday and Sunday overnights and holiday weekends
  • During closure hours, all traffic will be diverted to the Goethals Bridge
  • Oversize and overweight trucks should use the Goethals Bridge and will be banned from the Bayonne Bridge through project completion

In addition, up to eight full weekend closures of the Bayonne Bridge will be required each year during the construction period. These weekend closures will be announced in advance. The Bayonne Bridge "Raise the Roadway" Project is the second of three innovative bridge construction projects representing a $2.8 billion investment in the three bridges that connect Staten Island, New York and New Jersey: the Bayonne Bridge, the Outerbridge Crossing, and the Goethals Bridge. The Outerbridge Crossing Paving Project was successfully completed ahead of schedule in October 2013.
