Attention: Motorists Using the George Washington Bridge During the Overnight Hours

Beginning Monday August 5, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey will be making significant roadway improvements on the upper level of the George Washington Bridge during the overnight hours. Expect multiple lane closures and intermittent traffic holds on the upper level ending at 5 a.m. on weekdays and 10 a.m. on Saturdays. There is the potential for significant delays with only one lane open on the upper level.

All motorists are encouraged to seek an alternate route. All lanes of the lower level of the George Washington Bridge will be open to passenger vehicles and both E-ZPass and cash payments will be accepted on the evenings work is being done in the eastbound direction. Trucks are required to use the upper level at all times.

Work will begin on the westbound side on August 5, and will alternate from the westbound to the eastbound side. Highway message signs, 511 and traffic reports will advise motorists in advance as to which direction will be under construction (on any given night).

Visit our website at panynj.gov/GWBSteel, for the latest work schedule and project information. For current traffic information, call 511 or visit 511NY.org or 511NJ.org.
