Clean Vessel Incentive Program Off To A Great Start

Twelve shipping lines and a total of 448 vessels have enrolled in the Port Authority's Clean Vessel Incentive (CVI) program since the initiative launched on January 1, 2013.

A key component of the Port of NY & NJ's Clean Air Strategy, the CVI program encourages vessel operators to send their cleanest ships to Port Authority facilities by providing financial incentives to vessels that achieve high scores on the World Port Climate Initiative Environmental Ship Index (ESI). Vessels can earn additional incentives per ship call if they participate in vessel speed reduction and have either Tier II or Tier III engines.

The Port Authority is one of two US ports and the first East Coast port to offer such incentives.

In the first quarter of 2013, 128 vessels from 11 Ocean Carriers made 419 qualifying vessel arrivals and departures, earning $307,500 in financial incentives.

Maersk Shipping Line lead the way with 58 qualifying vessel calls.

MSC had the cleanest vessel with an ESI score of 43.1.

"Our shippers continue to offer remarkably competitive transit times," said Sharon Heller, CVI Program Manager for The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. "The CVI program is our way of helping them to enhance their logistics supply chain with green shipping methods, while also attracting the cleanest ships to call on the Port of NY & NJ", all of which leads to reduced emissions and improved air quality for the region.

Shipping lines currently participating in the program include: APL, Ltd.; Great American Lines; Hamburg SUD; Hapag-Lloyd; Hyundai; K-Line America; Maersk; MOL (America); MSC; NYK Line (North America); Yang Ming; and Zim.
