George Washington Bridge Overnight Upper Level Steel Deck Replacement Project for week of Sept 2nd: closures will occur in the New York-bound direction Tues & Thurs, 9P-5A, Friday, 10P-10A, only 1 lane open with multiple sporadic temporary full closures likely resulting in extensive delays. The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey has awarded awarded a 40-year design-build-finance-maintain contract to NYNJ Link Partnership as part of a $1.5 billion public-private partnership (PPP) to replace the current Goethals Bridge with a new state-of-the-art cable-stayed span. This will be the first bridge the Port Authority's built since 1931 when the George Washington Bridge opened to vehicular traffic. The project also marks the first true surface transportation public-private partnership in the Northeast.
