In 2009, the Port of New York and New Jersey handled 4.6 million loaded and unloaded 20-foot equivalent units (TEUs), a 13.4% drop in total container traffic from 2008. Loaded containerized cargo volumes fell by 12.7%. The Port's leading trade partners continued to be Asia and North Europe.
In addition, ExpressRail, the Port Authority's on-dock rail system in New York and New Jersey, handled 308,131 cargo containers.
The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey is investing $200 million in seaport-related improvements in 2010 to improve efficiency and capacity at the Port.
