PORT AUTHORITY SPONSORS NETWORKING SESSION FOR LOCAL MINORITY/WOMEN-OWNED PROFESSIONALS

Local minority and women-owned architectural and engineering firms got a golden opportunity to rub elbows with some of the country's leading architecture and engineering firms at the Port Authority's first Architectural and Engineering Exchange Program, held on September 30 at the World Trade Center.

"The Port Authority is determined that small, women and minority firms get a fair share of the business the Port Authority generates each year," said Michael Massiah, Director of the bistate agency's Office of Business and Job Opportunity. "That's why we host events like this one, to help the smaller local firms get together with our largest contractors."

The event brought together representatives of 18 major firms with about 120 representatives of small, minority and women-owned architecture/engineering companies to discuss how they can obtain Port Authority contracts and sub-consulting work.

Among the large A/E firms at the program were Booz-Allen & Hamilton Inc.; Edwards and Kelcey Engineers Inc.; STV Inc.; Frederic R. Harris Inc.; Parsons Brinckerhoff Quade & Douglas Inc.; and HNTB Corp.

In 1998, the Port Authority awarded minority and women-owned businesses $6.5 million in architectural and engineering consulting contracts, representing approximately 13 percent of the agency's 1998 professional service budget.
