PORT AUTHORITY IMPROVES PARKING RATE STRUCTURE AT KENNEDY INTERNATIONAL, NEWARK INTERNATIONAL AND LAGUARDIA AIRPORTS -- New Rates, Tailored to Changing Customer Needs, Go into Effect on October 4

The Port Authority will offer a new, 30-minute parking rate of $2 for drivers making a quick stop at Kennedy International, Newark International or LaGuardia Airport. The new rate, which takes effect Sunday, October 4, 1998, was announced today by Port Authority Director of Aviation Robert J. Kelly.

"The majority of people who drive to our airports are either picking someone up or dropping someone off, and this new rate is designed with them in mind," Mr. Kelly said. "These customers have been asking for an economical way to leave their cars briefly to assist their passengers, and we are responding to their request."

The new $2 rate is part of a package of parking rate changes designed to meet the needs of airport customers, manage parking capacity better and reduce congestion on the roadways and frontages that serve the passenger terminals. About 80% of all customers parking at the airports will pay the same or less under the new rates than they pay now. They are the first changes in parking rates at the region's three major airports since 1993. Mr. Kelly announced another change requested by airport customers that also will go into effect on October 4 - the introduction of reduced-rate, long-term parking at LaGuardia Airport. He said that 600 spaces in Lot 3, between the Central Terminal Building and the US Airways Terminal, will be reserved for long-term parking. The cost will be $24 for the first day, the same as in LaGuardia's Daily lots, but only $10 or each day thereafter.

At Newark Airport, the maximum daily rate in Lots D and E will be increased from $7 to $12. "The opening of Newark Airport's monorail turned Lots D and E into premium lots by virtue of their great convenience," Mr. Kelly said. "The new rate structure recognizes this and will allow us to better match the supply of spaces in these lots with customer demand for them. For customers who want less expensive, long-term parking at Newark Airport, frequent shuttle bus service connects the terminals to Lots G and H, where the rate is only $8 per day."

These rate changes follow a series of parking improvements at all three airports. They include valet parking at Kennedy and Newark, complimentary van service within the parking lots at all three airports, additional parking spaces, more staff to help expedite traffic flow and free assistance with car problems, such as dead batteries, flat tires and the like. "These parking improvements are just one part of a comprehensive program currently under way at all three airports to improve customer service wherever possible," said Mr. Kelly.

Following is the complete airport parking rate structure that takes effect October 4:

* The cost for Daily parking at the three airports will be $2 for up to one-half hour, $4 for up to two hours, and $2 for every hour or part thereafter for a maximum of $24 per day. The lowest current rate is $4.

* Long-term lots G and H at Newark Airport will cost the same as the Daily lot rate, except that the maximum per day will be $8.

* Hourly parking at Newark Airport will cost $2 for up to one-half hour, $4 for up to two hours, and $4 for every hour or part thereafter for a maximum of $48 per day. more

* Valet parking, which was introduced at Newark International on July 1 and Kennedy International on July 31 of this year, will cost $18 for the first day and $9 for every 12 hours or part of 12 hours thereafter.

* Long-term parking at JFK will cost $2 for up to 12 hours and $2 for every 2 hours of part thereafter, to a maximum of $8 per day.
