FROM THE GROUND UP, NEW JERSEY STUDENTS GET INTRODUCTION TO AVIATION CAREERS



Some 2,500 students from schools near Newark International Airport will get first-hand looks at airport jobs ranging from aircraft maintenance to handling contraband-sniffing beagles, at the airport’s Sixth Annual Aviation Career and Education Expo on Wednesday, May 13, and Thursday, May 14.

The Expo will feature workshops, airport tours and more than 20 exhibits. The students, in grades 5 through 12, will learn about aviation-related career opportunities ranging from law enforcement to aviation communications and air traffic control, package express services, emergency response and medical services, federal inspection functions, airline and airport operations, aircraft maintenance, fueling and ground services and airport maintenance. Younger students will take make-believe airline trips on the first day of the Expo.

“This year, as the Port Authority celebrates its 50th year as operator of Newark International Airport, we look toward the future,” said Robert J. Kelly, Director of Aviation of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. “Newark International generates some 110,000 direct and indirect jobs, and aviation is a fast-growing field that offers marvelous career opportunities.”

Concurrent activities for students in grades 5-7 will take place on Wednesday in Terminal A at Gate 18, Terminal C’s Gates 120 and 121, the FedEx complex and Airport Maintenance Building 79. Activities for the older students will take place in Building 79, the FedEx complex and Continental Airlines’ Hangar 56 on Thursday.

All participants will convene both days for lunch in Hangar 56 on, where prizes will be awarded to essay and airport trivia contest winners. The prizes include free domestic air travel donated by American Airlines, Continental Airlines, TWA, and America West Airlines, and other prizes donated by Delta Air Lines, National Car Rental, the Newark Airport Marriott Hotel and American Duty Free.

Directions: Take New Jersey Turnpike to Exit 13A or 14, or I-78, Routes 1 & 9 or 22 to Newark Airport exits. Follow airport signs for Terminal A and C. Trailblazer signs will be posted for Building 79, FedEx and Hangar 56.
