The New York Post did a great disservice to Port Authority Chief Operating Officer Ernesto Butcher who is retiring after 40 years of dedicated service. Contrary to a Post story, he is retiring of his own choosing following decades of unwavering service. As COO, Mr. Butcher oversaw capital projects and operational issues, not World Trade Center redevelopment expenditures or toll and fare matters, as inaccurately reported by the Post. He served as the Port Authority's voice in the darkest of days following 9/11, providing a steady hand to an agency reeling from unimaginable loss. His colleagues can attest to Mr. Butcher's leadership, which has been nothing short of exemplary and inspiring. For this, and his steadfast work over four decades, the record must be set straight.
