OUTERBRIDGE CROSSING CONSTRUCTION ALERT: Port Authority To Adjust Hours Of Nightly Shutdown In Westbound Lanes

Date: May 23, 2001
Press Release Number: 78-2001

The hours for the nightly closing of all westbound lanes on the Outerbridge Crossing will be adjusted beginning Tuesday, May 29, to reduce the inconvenience to motorists traveling to summertime destinations. The closings are required to make needed repairs to the concrete bridge deck and asphalt surface on the bridge.
Under the new closing hours, the Outerbridge Crossing will reopen in the New Jersey-bound direction two hours earlier on Saturday and Sunday mornings during the summer months. No closings will occur on the Memorial Day, Independence Day or Labor Day weekends.

Summer construction hours, during which all westbound lanes of the bridge to New Jersey will be closed, are as follows:

· May 29 through August 30: Monday to Thursday - 9:30 p.m. to 6 a.m. Friday -11 p.m. to 6 a.m. Saturday Saturday -11 p.m. to 7 a.m. Sunday

During these times, westbound traffic will be diverted to the Goethals Bridge.

The three-year, $51.2 million Outerbridge Crossing project involves repairs to 135,000 square feet of the bridge’s concrete deck, replacement of roadway joints and a new asphalt riding surface for the bridge deck.
