Press Release Number: 163-2001
The Board of Commissioners of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey today approved the appointment of Joseph J. Seymour to the position of Executive Director.
Mr. Seymour, who has been Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the New York Power Authority, was nominated for the Port Authority position by New York Governor George E. Pataki. He will succeed outgoing Executive Director Neil Levin, who was lost in the attacks on the World Trade Center.
“Neil Levin was my friend, and I will work hard every day to honor his memory by ensuring the Port Authority plays an active role in revitalizing the entire region,” Mr. Seymour said. “I am honored by the trust and confidence in me that Governor Pataki showed by recommending my appointment as Executive Director of the Port Authority at this challenging time. I look forward to working with Chairman Sinagra, Vice Chairman Gargano, the members of the Board, and the thousands of dedicated men and women at the Port Authority who have continued to work tirelessly in spite of the tragic events of September 11 and the personal toll it has taken on them.”
Mr. Seymour was appointed a trustee of the New York Power Authority by Governor Pataki on February 13, 2001. He was confirmed by the state Senate and subsequently elected chairman and chief executive officer by his fellow trustees.
Mr. Seymour came to the Power Authority after serving four-and-a-half years as New York State Commissioner of General Services (OGS). Prior to that, he was Executive Deputy Commissioner of the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles, beginning in March 1995. He has more than 30 years of administrative, managerial and economic development experience in New York State and local governments.
