PORT AUTHORITY PREPARED TO ACCOMMODATE NEARLY FIVE MILLION TRAVELERS FOR MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND PERIOD

Date: May 26, 2011
Press Release Number: 31-2011

The Port Authority is prepared to accommodate the nearly five million people expected to travel by air or car during the upcoming Memorial Day weekend period – the official start of the summer travel season.

Airports

Over the Memorial Day holiday period, from Friday, May 27, through Monday, May 30, the agency’s airports are expected to carry 1.4 million passengers.

More than 644,000 passengers are expected to use John F. Kennedy International Airport. Due to limited on-airport parking, passengers are encouraged to take AirTrain JFK from the Jamaica or Howard Beach stations to the airport terminals. Those who must drive to JFK should call 718 244-4080 for parking information or tune to airport radio at 1630 AM for parking updates.

At Newark Liberty International Airport, more than 440,000 passengers are expected. People traveling to and from the airport are advised to take AirTrain Newark, which links the airport to NJ Transit and Amtrak rail services. Travelers who drive to Newark Airport can call 888 EWR-INFO and press 22 for up-to-date parking information or tune to 530 AM when near the airport.

A projected 325,000 passengers will use LaGuardia Airport during the holiday weekend. Travelers who drive to LaGuardia should call 718 533-3850 for parking information.

Stewart International Airport is expected to accommodate more than 5,500 passengers during the holiday weekend. Parking rates and additional information about all of the airports can be found at www.panynj.gov.

Passengers can sign up for Airport Info Alerts at www.panynj.gov. This free subscription service via PDA, cell phone, pager or computer notifies customers about weather delays, parking lot capacity, and AirTrain service delays.

Tunnels, Bridges and Terminals

Approximately 3.4 million travelers are expected to use Port Authority bridges and tunnels during the holiday, about the same number as last year.

The Port Authority Police will operate Driving While Intoxicated checkpoints during the weekend. Travelers will be subject to random inspection, and police will distribute literature on the dangers of drinking and driving.

At the Port Authority Bus Terminal, passenger traffic is expected to be heavier than normal, so customers are urged to allow extra travel time.

PATH

On Friday, May 27, PATH will operate extra trains as necessary for commuters leaving early for the long holiday weekend. On Monday, Memorial Day, PATH trains will run on a Sunday schedule. For more information, call 800 234-PATH.
