GENERAL BUILDING LABORERS’ LOCAL 66 SUPPORTS PORT AUTHORITY PLAN

Date: Aug 09, 2011
Press Release Number: 75-2011

Statement By Steve Flanagan, Business Manager Of Laborers’ Local 66

“Every day millions of New Yorkers utilize the facilities that the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey has built and maintained for years. From the region’s major airports, to the roads, bridges and highways, our infrastructure, and with it, our economic survival, are dependent on the Port Authority.

In order for the Port Authority to enact its ambitious 10-year capital plan, which will benefit all New Yorkers, it must have adequate funding. That is why the members of Laborers’ Local 66 unambiguously support the Port Authority’s plan to finance and fund its capital plan.

Work on Port Authority projects creates hundred of good paying jobs for the organized construction industry. In a time of economic distress, the Port should be applauded for its commitment to undertake building projects that will create jobs, improve our city and state and stimulate further growth and development. These projects can only be undertaken if the Port Authority has the resources and funding. These proposed toll and fare increases are the way to ensure that the Port Authority has the resources needed to successfully achieve its goals.”
