ESSEX COUNTY CONSTRUCTION AND BUILDING TRADES COUNCIL
SUPPORTS PORT AUTHORITY PLAN

Date: Aug 10, 2011
Press Release Number: 76-2011

The Essex County Construction and Building Trades Council has come out in support of the Port Authority of New York/New Jersey’s proposed new toll structure. The council, which represents 20,000 workers who are employed by thousands of local general and specialty contractors, views the Port Authority’s proposal as a responsible measure that addresses the region’s present and long term needs.

The Essex County Construction and Building Trades Council President Marty Schwartz and its members are backing the Port Authority’s $33 Billion capital plan which makes critical infrastructure improvements throughout the 17 county region.

“The Port Authority isn’t backing away from its responsibilities, nor is it deferring important decisions. Maintaining a rich and vibrant region requires foresight, good planning, and a safe and efficient transportation system. New revenue raised by the Port Authority will be directly used to keep people and product moving and provide new safety and security measures,” said Schwartz. “Also, in a construction industry that is facing 20 percent unemployment, the Port Authority’s capital plan WILL CREATE TENS OF THOUSANDS OF CONSTRUCTION JOBS.”
