Date: Apr 04, 2002 Press Release Number: 33-2002
PORT AUTHORITY TO EXPAND OVERNIGHT HOURS OF OPERATION AT FIRST FULLY AUTOMATED TOLL PLAZA AT GWB
The hours of operation for the Port Authority’s only fully automated toll plaza at the George Washington Bridge will be increased beginning April 8 in response to the popularity of the lane reserved exclusively for E-ZPass customers.
Under the new schedule, the plaza will remain open exclusively to E-ZPass customers for an additional hour on weekdays – until 6 a.m. instead of 5 a.m. The opening hour, 11 p.m., will remain unchanged, as will the weekend hours of 11 p.m. to 7 a.m.
Before the automated toll plaza opened last April, the Palisades Interstate Parkway entrance to the bridge was closed on weeknights.
“Despite significant shifts in commuting patterns since the September 11 attacks, we continue to see strong growth in E-ZPass use at our tunnels and bridges, especially at the George Washington Bridge and its Palisades Interstate Parkway toll plaza,” said Ken Philmus, the Port Authority’s Director of Tunnels, Bridges and Terminals. “With 86 percent of travelers now using E-ZPass at the Palisades Interstate Parkway toll plaza during the 5 a.m. to 6 a.m. weekday hour, we have been able to expand this customer convenience and speed travel at the world’s busiest bridge.”
During overnight hours, when the Palisades Interstate Parkway toll plaza is open to E-ZPass customers only, signs direct cash customers to alternate routes to the bridge.
