WORLD TRADE CENTER HERO TO VISIT JERSEY CITY STUDENTS
Date: Apr 17, 2002 Press Release Number: 41-2002
PATH Executive Will Read Stories to Pre-Kindergarten Class
Victoria Cross Kelly, Deputy Director of PATH, will read children’s stories to a class of preschool youngsters at P.S. 6 in Jersey City on Thursday, April 18 at 9:30 a.m. She will be participating in the Jersey City public school system’s Childhood Reading Program as part of Jersey City’s “Week of The Young Child” celebration. Ms. Kelly will read from a picture book on trains.
Quick thinking by Ms. Kelly and members of her staff saved the lives of thousands during the September 11 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center. Upon hearing that the then-unidentified catastrophe had taken place, she immediately instructed the trainmaster to keep passengers from being discharged from trains at the World Trade Center PATH station and ordered trains in or approaching the station to turn back or divert to stations north of the area. Ms. Kelly did not leave the PATH station herself until she was sure that all PATH passengers were evacuated.
Media who wish to cover this event should come to the main school building of P.S. 6 at 100 Saint Paul Avenue in Jersey City. The school is located on St. Paul Avenue between Oakland and Central Avenue.
