Date: Apr 19, 2001
Press Release Number: 64-2001

Move over, \"Gladiator.\" LaGuardia Airport has won yet another prestigious award for customer service.
LaGuardia\'s Central Terminal Building captured first prize for food and beverage programs at large airports in Airports Council International-North America\'s fourth annual Excellence in Airport Concessions Contest, judged by experts in the food and beverage, retail and marketing fields.

LaGuardia competed against airports from major cities across North America, including Philadelphia, Atlanta, Houston, Toronto and Vancouver.

\"In repeated surveys, our customers have told us that one of our top priorities should be providing a range of restaurants offering good food at reasonable prices,\" said Port Authority Director of Aviation William R. DeCota. \"This latest award clearly shows that the Port Authority is succeeding.\"

The award also is a tribute to MarketPlace Development, Inc., which was chosen by the Port Authority to lead an $18 million development program at LaGuardia. The program ultimately will create nearly 50 new shops and restaurants covering 45,000 square feet of retail space in the Central Terminal Building.

\"MarketPlace Development\'s successful partnership with the Port Authority has transformed the Central Terminal Building into a premier dining and shopping destination for our millions of customers,\" said Lillian Y. Tan, General Manager for MarketPlace Development at LaGuardia.

This honor is the latest in a string of major awards for LaGuardia Airport.

The Port Authority\'s actions that averted potential chaos at LaGuardia last fall by limiting flights during peak periods were recognized with an Aerospace Laurel award from Aviation Week & Space Technology magazine.

LaGuardia also captured three first prizes in the Airport Retail News Best Airport Concessions 2001 competition judged by aviation industry experts. Overall, the Port Authority\'s airports won six first-place awards in this year\'s Airport Retail News competition, more than any other commercial airport system in the country.
