Press Release Number: 143-2002
A white Christmas is forecast for parts of the New York-New Jersey region, and the Port Authority is making preparations to ensure holiday travelers arrive at their destinations safely.
The Port Authority is ready with more than 200 pieces of heavy snow equipment, thousands of tons of salt, sand and deicing chemicals and a high-tech weather forecasting system that helps ease airport delays.
The Port Authority will have extra staff on duty beginning tonight and continuing throughout the day tomorrow. During the most severe storms, Port Authority employees work around the clock in 12-hour shifts. The airports, bridges, tunnels and PATH have “snow desks” where key personnel analyze weather reports and deploy staff and equipment. In case of a major snowstorm, every facility employee is available.
Media can get regular updates on conditions at Port Authority facilities by calling 212 435-7777, and radio media can obtain sound bites on storm preparedness on the Port Authority’s Web site – http://www.panynj.gov/radio/.
