PATH MEETS SHARP SURGE IN RIDERSHIP DUE TO NJTRANSIT DERAILMENT WITH EXTRA CARS, ADDITIONAL ONSITE PERSONNEL AND MINIMAL SERVICE IMPACT

Nearly 188,000 additional passengers accommodated through the end of Wednesday as a result of Monday’s incident at New York Penn Station; PATH continues to cross-honor NJT and Amtrak customers

PATH ridership has surged by more than 60,000 riders a day on average since Monday’s train derailment at New York Penn Station impacted NJ Transit and Amtrak riders – a nearly 20-percent increase -- with safety and service maintained through the deployment of extra trains and onsite personnel to assist customers.

In addition, PATH continues to cross-honor NJT and Amtrak customers at Newark Penn Station, 33rd Street and Hoboken stations, a plan expected to remain in place at least through the end of today.

PATH Director/General Manager Michael Marino said that, despite significantly higher ridership levels, PATH experienced minimal delays or adverse service impact, and has been running normal operations since before the Wednesday morning rush. On Wednesday, PATH safely achieved 100-percent on-time performance and has maintained an average 93-percent on-time rate since Monday.

“Our first priority always is the safety and convenience of our PATH customers, and in cases such as this, we’re working diligently to serve the region and the broader traveling public until conditions are back to normal,” said Marino.

Since this week’s derailment, additional PATH staff and Port Authority police have been deployed throughout the system to facilitate train service and provide assistance to passengers as needed, and 94 extra trains have been added since Monday to meet higher demand. PATH will continue to run additional trains through the evening commute tonight.

The extra peak hour service will not impact PATH’s ongoing efforts to perform essential upgrade work at non-peak hours. Marino said that PATH is on track to complete federally mandated Positive Train Control (PTC) signal installation system-wide for enhanced safety by the deadline of December 2018.

Passengers should expect higher volume on all PATH trains this afternoon and tomorrow, allow extra travel time, and check train destination signs before boarding.
