PORT AUTHORITY CAPTURES NATIONAL AWARD FOR POST-SEPTEMBER 11 PUBLIC AWARENESS CAMPAIGN

The Port Authority has captured top honors in a national competition for its public awareness campaign that followed the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center.

The agency won first place in the 2003 American Business Awards Best Corporate Media category for newspaper ads entitled \"United We Stand\" and \"Remembrance.\" More than 500 entries were submitted to the contest from public and private sector organizations, including many Fortune 500 companies. The Port Authority was the only public agency with two finalist nominations.

The Port Authority conceived the series of ads and posters after the destruction of the World Trade Center on September 11. They honored the 84 agency employees who died that day, and to show the people who rely on the agency’s airports, seaports, tunnels and bridges, and PATH system that it remained strong, and committed to maintain service levels and rebuild.

Port Authority Chief of Public and Government Affairs Michael Petralia said, \"We are extremely honored to accept these awards on behalf of the entire Port Authority family. The tragic events of September 11 had a profound effect on all of us, and we felt obligated to show the region that we are stronger and more determined than ever to fulfill our transportation mission.\"

Port Authority Director of Public Affairs Kayla Bergeron said, \"The destruction of the World Trade Center was extremely personal to all Port Authority employees since the agency built, owned and maintained it and many of us worked there. The messages we conveyed in this campaign were designed to memorialize the importance of that day, and to honor the 84 employees who heroically lost their lives.\"

Port Authority Assistant Director of Public Affairs Kevin Kirchman said, \"These ads convey a clear message from the Port Authority. The agency wants its customers to remember what occurred on September 11, and to also know that we must move forward to further enhance our world-class transportation system.\"

The American Business Awards are the first national, all-encompassing business awards program. The awards recognize outstanding leadership, innovation, perseverance, creativity, teamwork and integrity in more than 30 categories.

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey operates some of the busiest and most important transportation links in the region. They include John F. Kennedy International, Newark Liberty International, LaGuardia and Teterboro airports; the George Washington Bridge; the Lincoln and Holland tunnels; the three bridges between Staten Island and New Jersey; the PATH rapid-transit system; the Downtown Manhattan Heliport; Port Newark; the Elizabeth-Port Authority Marine Terminal; the Howland Hook Marine Terminal on Staten Island; the Brooklyn Piers/Red Hook Container Terminal; and the Port Authority Bus Terminal in midtown Manhattan. The agency also owns the 16-acre World Trade Center site in Lower Manhattan. The Port Authority is financially self-supporting and receives no tax revenue from either state.
