U.S. MARINE UNIT TO PRESENT PORT AUTHORITY POLICE WITH AGENCY FLAGS IT CARRIED ONTO THE IRAQI BATTLEFIELD

Date: May 21, 2003
Press Release Number: 67-2003

A U.S. Marine Corps unit will present the Port Authority Police Department with two flags it carried onto the Iraqi battlefield in honor of the 37 officers and commanders lost on September 11, 2001, during a 7 a.m. ceremony on Thursday, May 22.

Col. Richard Mills of Huntington, L.I., commanding officer of the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit, will present the flags – an American flag and a World Trade Center commemorative flag – to a contingent of Port Authority officers at the World Trade Center site.

The flags had previously flown at the World Trade Center site. The Port Authority Police gave the flags to the Marine Unit in May 2002, before it deployed to Africa, Eastern Europe and eventually to Iraq.

Media interested in covering the ceremony are asked to report to the gate at the intersection of Liberty and Washington streets. Proper media credentials are required. Media also must notify the Public Affairs Department in advance if they plan to attend.
