MEDIA ADVISORY - POLICE UNITY BICYCLE TOUR TO KICK OFF AT GROUND ZERO

About 300 police officers from across the country will assemble at Ground Zero on Sunday, May 9, 2004, at 7 a.m., to begin a 300-mile bicycle tour to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, D.C. The annual tour kicks off National Police Week, May 9 to May 15.

Fifteen officers from the Port Authority Police Department, which lost 37 of its members on 9/11, will participate in this year’s tour. The cyclists will depart from the World Trade Center after a brief ceremony and will ride to Perth Amboy, N.J., for a ceremony scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. at Sadowski Park on High Street.

Port Authority Police Chief Christopher Trucillo will address the cyclists and be joined by the Port Authority Police Pipe and Drum Band and Honor Guard. Port Authority Police Detective Wil Jimeno, who was trapped in the rubble of the World Trade Center for 13 hours after trying to rescue victims, also will attend.
