The Port Authority will mark the 50th anniversary of the first cargo container ship to depart from the Port of New York and New Jersey during a ceremony at 10:15 a.m. on Tuesday, April 25.
The ceremony will mark a significant milestone in the evolution of the maritime industry at the port, which has grown to be the leading East Coast destination for international shippers. The birth of containerization led to the construction of the world’s first container port in Elizabeth, N.J. in 1962.
The event will be held at Berth 50 at the New Jersey Marine Terminal Complex.
Directions: From the New Jersey Turnpike, take Exit 14 to Port Newark. Bear left and follow the signs for Port Newark. Proceed through traffic light. Exit at sign for Corbin Street, to the Marsh Street light, turn left and follow signs for the designated parking area immediately on the right.
