The Port Authority is supporting the Regional Alliance for Small Contractors and the Mechanics’ Institute, which are providing comprehensive training to minority-owned, women-owned, and small business owners.
The Port Authority and other public and commercial organizations will sponsor an open house at the Mechanics’ Institute, 20 West 44th Street in Manhattan, from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, June 14, to announce their new partnership and to kick off four evening workshops introducing attendees to various aspects of the construction industry. The workshops will cover topics such as cost estimation, construction methods and technologies, blueprint reading, and project scheduling.
“The Port Authority is proud to be part of this training initiative,” said Port Authority Executive Director Kenneth J. Ringler Jr. “This is another way we can demonstrate and continue our more than 40-year commitment to providing opportunities for minority-owned, women-owned and small businesses in our region.”
“We are looking forward to starting a new relationship with the Mechanics’ Institute and providing our members, clients and small business community with the best construction training in the region,” said Earle Walker, the Regional Alliance’s Executive Director. “We also would like to thank the Port Authority for the financial assistance the agency is giving to this program.”
Mechanics’ Institute Director James Loriega said, “Our institute was founded on the belief that everyone deserves the opportunity to enhance their livelihood by expanding their education. It is for this reason that we are very pleased to be partnering with the Regional Alliance, an organization that, like ours, works tirelessly to enhance the opportunities available to deserving men and women.”
The Mechanics’ Institute is funded and supported by the General Society of Mechanics and Tradesmen of the City of New York. Since 1858, the Mechanics’ Institute has provided privately endowed free evening classes offering training in the technical aspects of various building trades.
The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey operates many of the busiest and most important transportation links in the region. They include John F. Kennedy International, Newark Liberty International, LaGuardia and Teterboro airports; AirTrain JFK and AirTrain Newark; the George Washington Bridge and Bus Station; the Lincoln and Holland tunnels; the three bridges between Staten Island and New Jersey; the PATH (Port Authority Trans-Hudson) rapid-transit system; the Port Authority-Downtown Manhattan Heliport; Port Newark; the Elizabeth-Port Authority Marine Terminal; the Howland Hook Marine Terminal on Staten Island; the Brooklyn Piers/Red Hook Container Terminal; and the Port Authority Bus Terminal in midtown Manhattan. The agency also owns the 16-acre World Trade Center site in Lower Manhattan.
The Port Authority is financially self-supporting and receives no tax revenue from either state.
The non profit Regional Alliance for Small Contractors was created in 1989 under the leadership of the Port Authority to assist minority-owned, women-owned and small businesses in improving their ability to compete for construction contracts in New York and New Jersey.
The Regional Alliance provides financial, technical, management and marketing support; promotes policies that strengthen the regional construction industry; and works to increase the participation and representation of minorities and women in business and in the workforce. The Regional Alliance also seeks to increase the number and size of construction contracts awarded to minority-owned and women-owned companies.
