Statement By: The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey Regarding Alleged Terrorist Plot Uncovered in United Kingdom

Date: Aug 10, 2006
Press Release Number: 0-2006

In response to the alleged terrorist plot involving flights from the United Kingdom to the United States, The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey advises travelers of the following changes to the airport screening procedures at Newark Liberty International, John F. Kennedy International and LaGuardia airports.

The Transportation Security Administration is prohibiting LIQUIDS OR GELS OF ANY TYPE in carry-on luggage. These items must be in checked baggage. Prohibited items include: beverages, suntan lotions, shampoo, creams, toothpaste, hair gel and similar items.

The TSA will allow baby formula and medication, but these items will be inspected at the checkpoints.

Passengers should call their carriers before traveling to the airport since some flights are being cancelled or delayed. Travelers should arrive at the airport at least two hours before their scheduled flights.

The Port Authority has been and remains on a heightened state of alert at all of its facilities since the terrorist attacks of 9/11. As a result of today’s revelations, we have increased police presence at the airports to assist federal agencies, including the TSA, U.S. Customs and Border Protection and the Joint Terrorism Task Force.
