Press Release Number: 99-2001
Travelers are urged to avoid the northbound Henry Hudson Parkway on two weekends in July when one of two lanes of the ramp leading from the Northbound Henry Hudson Parkway (Exit 14) to the upper and lower levels of the George Washington Bridge, the Cross Bronx and Major Deegan Expressways and the Harlem River Drive, will be closed for rehabilitation.
The work will be performed from 9 p.m. Friday, July 13, to 2 p.m. Monday, July 16, and again from 9 p.m. Friday, July 27, to 2 p.m. Monday, July 30. If the weather forecast calls for heavy rain, the closures may be postponed. The rain dates are August 10 – 13, and August 24 – 27.
Motorists should expect extensive delays, in excess of one hour, throughout most of the weekend. The Port Authority strongly advises travelers to use alternate routes, including the FDR Drive, the Harlem River Drive or the Major Deegan Expressway, the Holland and Lincoln tunnels, or public transportation.
Also, bus service is available to and from the George Washington Bridge Bus Station on NJ Transit, Coach USA/Red & Tan Lines/Rockland Coaches/Shortline, Spanish Transportation and Vanessa Express. Other transportation alternatives include MTA/NYCTA trains and buses, and NY Waterway Ferries.
For information and assistance on alternate routes, call the Port Authority’s Customer Connection at 1-800-221-9903, between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. weekdays to speak to a customer relations representative. Automated information is available at other times. You may also find information on the Port Authority\'s Web site at www.panynj.gov.
The ramp work is necessary to permanently repair the roadway and to improve the riding surface as part of a $26.4 million contract to rehabilitate various ramps that connect the Henry Hudson Parkway, Riverside Drive and local streets with the upper and lower levels of the George Washington Bridge, Cross Bronx Expressway, Major Deegan Expressway and Harlem River Drive. The ramp work involves the removal of asphalt, concrete and stone sub-base and replacement with new sub-base and concrete roadway. It also includes the installation of new curbs and catch basins for improved drainage.
