Press Release Number: 2-2007
Three of four westbound upper-level lanes and two of four eastbound upper-level lanes of the George Washington Bridge will be closed for construction beginning at 11 p.m. Friday, January 12, until 8 a.m. Saturday, January 13. Beginning at 11:59 p.m. Saturday, January 13, until 8 a.m. Sunday, two of four eastbound and westbound lanes of the upper level of the bridge will be closed.
The Palisades Interstate Parkway toll plaza also will be closed during this period. Staffed toll lanes will be available on the lower level for cash-paying automobile customers during this overnight closure.
The construction is part of the Port Authority’s efforts to upgrade the bridge to help ensure safe and efficient travel. As trucks are restricted to the upper level of the bridge at all times, truck drivers should expect to encounter significant delays during these hours, and are strongly urged to consider alternative routes to New Jersey, such as the Lincoln Tunnel and Tappan Zee Bridge.
Motorists are strongly urged to use the bridge’s lower level or consider using the Lincoln Tunnel as an alternate route into New Jersey. The work is weather-sensitive and may be canceled in the event of heavy rain. Customers can call the Port Authority at 800 221-9903 for automated information or visit www.panynj.info and click on “traffic advisory.”
