STATEMENT BY PORT AUTHORITY REGARDING DOT/FAA ANNOUNCEMENT TO IMPLEMENT AN AUCTION AT LAGUARDIA AIRPORT

Date: Apr 16, 2008
Press Release Number: 36-2008

"Instead of modernizing a 1950s-era air traffic control system to meet passenger demand for more flights, the DOT and FAA are choosing to charge passengers more money via an auction without reducing delays and delivering relief. The right solutions are increasing capacity, rationalizing airline schedules and improving customer service.

"We're pleased the FAA is implementing one of the Port Authority Flight Delay Task Force's key recommendations -- adding new traffic lanes in the skies -- and we again call on the agency to enact the more than 100 other recommendations of our Flight Delay Task Force, recommendations that will help reduce delays without putting more burdens on passengers.

"But the DOT and FAA's actions today ultimately would reduce choices for customers, make flying more expensive, and cut service to small cities that otherwise have no flights to New York City."
