STATEMENT BY PORT AUTHORITY REGARDING U.S. DOT/FAA ANNOUNCEMENT TO IMPLEMENT AUCTIONS AT KENNEDY AND NEWARK AIRPORTS
Date: May 16, 2008
Press Release Number: 44-2008
"Replacing a 1950s-era air traffic control system to increase capacity and meet passenger demand should be the hallmark of any program advanced by U.S. DOT and FAA. Instead, these agencies are proposing no solution for increasing capacity, except for a poorly conceived plan to auction flight slots to the highest bidder and increase ticket prices for passengers at our airports.
"We're pleased to see the federal government has placed a greater focus on providing passengers with more and useful information, which will improve customer service -- a key element of our Flight Delay Task Force's recommendations. But without the federal government doing its part to address the capacity issue, we will be left with a system that reduces choices for customers, makes flying more expensive, and cuts service to small cities that otherwise have no flights to the New York metropolitan region.
"The Port Authority will work with the airlines to examine our options for prohibiting the federal government from implementing this auction plan."
