MEDIA ADVISORY - PORT AUTHORITY POLICE ACADEMY TO GRADUATE 127 OFFICERS

Date: Apr 13, 2009
Press Release Number: 44-2009

The 111th class of Port Authority Police recruits - 115 men and 12 women - will receive their badges and join the ranks of the department during a ceremony at 10 a.m. Tuesday, April 14, at the Hilton Garden Inn on Staten Island.

Following the graduation ceremony, the new officers will be assigned to protect travelers and ensure safe commerce at the bistate agency's trade and transportation facilities.

As part of a 26-week training program, the new officers underwent training in New York and New Jersey law, firefighting, firearms, first responder, defensive tactics, water safety, emergency vehicle operations and the latest antiterrorism techniques.

In addition, the recruits are trained as certified first responders with expertise in the use of portable defibrillators and new AutoPulse cardiac support pump apparatus.

Port Authority Director of Public Safety/Superintendent of Police Samuel J. Plumeri said, "These officers have undergone a rigorous training regiment that will give them the tools they need to protect the millions of customers who use our transportation facilities every year. They are equipped to deal with modern day police work in the post-9/11 world, and we wish them well in their new careers."
