STATEMENT BY ERNESTO BUTCHER
CHIEF OPERATING OFFICER
THE PORT AUTHORITY OF NEW YORK AND NEW JERSEY
RE: MEMORIAL FOR VICTIMS OF 1993 TERRORIST ATTACK ON THE WORLD TRADE CENTER
February 26, 2002
For all of us at the Port Authority, the horror – and the heroism – of February 26, 1993 is just as fresh in our minds as is September 11th. We grieve deeply for those who lost their lives, four of whom were Port Authority employees. Over the years, we have taken steps to ensure that they are never forgotten, and to try to ease the financial burdens of their families.
As we have said repeatedly since September 11th, the Port Authority believes strongly that any memorial for those who perished at the World Trade Center must include a fitting remembrance of the victims of the 1993 terrorism.
