The Port Authority Bus Terminal’s façade will be transformed beginning today by a massive, state-of-the-art digital screen that will project high-resolution graphics, animated text and video at the corner of 8th Avenue and 42nd Street. Mediamesh will cover 6,000-square feet of the building’s exterior, providing a sleek, stainless steel mesh fabric with interwoven LED lights to render an array of images.

The new mesh will provide a vibrant look for the 61-year-old bus terminal’s façade, part of the Port Authority’s continued efforts to better serve our customers, while improving the look and operations of the facility. In addition to a modernized exterior, the Mediamesh will also provide increased ad revenue opportunities for the Port Authority during these challenging economic times.

Mediamesh’s design is uniquely suited to the bus terminal and provides proper ventilation within the building. The technology is more environmentally friendly than traditional digital signage, requires low maintenance, and is visible twenty-four hours a day.

Port Authority Chairman David Samson said, “Customers, visitors and the Times Square community will benefit from this modern new addition as we work to enhance the look of the bus terminal and generate new ad revenue at the same time. ”Port Authority Executive Director Chris Ward said, “This public-private partnership allows us to deploy new, exciting technology to continue the ongoing revival of the Times Square area, while also generating much needed revenue for transportation projects throughout the region.” “The installation of this cutting-edge technology is one part of our plan to dramatically improve the look of the bus terminal,” said Deputy Executive Director Bill Baroni. “Along with dramatic external painting and improved lighting, the Mediamesh weaves our historic bus terminal into the dynamic fabric of Times Square.”

As the Mediamesh goes live, the initial advertisers include The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, Fidelity Investments, Fox Television Broadcasting Network, Macquarie Equipment Financing, Paramount Studios, and Peter Pan Bus Lines.

Along with advertising, Mediamesh will provide information during emergencies and periodically promote charitable causes.
