Statement By Paul Nunziato, President

“Our facilities are the gateway to the nation’s largest city. Each day, millions travel through our tunnels, bridges and PATH stations to reach one of the world’s most popular destinations. Our ports are the commercial gateway for the Northeast as cargo moves to retailers serving more than 100 million people.

Our success has made our facilities some of the most recognizable in the world and, as such are prime terrorist targets. Those facilities must be protected.

Since 2001, The Port Authority has invested approximately $6 billion. In securing those facilities. Unfortunately, history reminds us of the threats we face and the consequences of not preparing. The new leadership of the Port Authority has made security its primary concern and we know this capital plan will enhance the security of our facilities. The Port Authority’s determination to do all that is possible to understand those threats, secure its facilities and protect the people that use them will cost billions more in the next ten years. In order to protect the public and safeguard the region’s economy, this cost must be met.

In order to maintain and enhance our security, the Port Authority PBA strongly supports this proposal.”
