The New York City District Council of Carpenters, a trade union consisting of 11 union locals representing 25,000 working men and women throughout the New York City metropolitan region, strongly supports the Port Authority’s proposed capital plan, which would generate thousands of much needed jobs within the Port District.
While we understand the pressure that a toll hike could potentially place on consumers, we believe that the significant number of new construction projects would have a great impact on employment opportunities in the region, leading to strong economic growth.
This plan would bring in a necessary cash infusion, while avoiding additional debt, in order to fund capital projects and maintain and improve the region’s transportation infrastructure. A failure to implement this plan could lead to an immediate loss of roughly 4,000 jobs and the potential deterioration of critical infrastructure. It is for these reasons that the New York City District Council of Carpenters strongly supports the Port Authority’s plan.
