Press Release Number: 71-2012
Today’s appointment of Lieutenant John Ryan as Acting Chief of the Department demonstrates our commitment to ensuring the most qualified and effective individuals command the agency’s most critical and sensitive operations.
Acting Chief of the Department Ryan, a resident of Long Island, started as a recruit in 1979 and rose through the ranks of the PAPD over the last 33 years. During his distinguished service, he has demonstrated exemplary leadership and management experience. From his years as a police officer working our airports, the Central Police Pool and the Port Authority Bus Terminal, to his command of the World Trade Center Rescue and Recovery Operation in the immediate aftermath of September 11, 2001, he has proven himself as a respected, exceptionally qualified, and ethical leader. During the WTC rescue and recovery effort, he guided operations on the most sensitive undertaking in our agency’s history, and he did it with dignity, respect and compassion.
The Port Authority Police Department protects some of the nation’s most valued facilities as well as millions of people daily. We are confident Acting Chief of the Department Ryan will lead the men and women of the PAPD forward in their critical mission to protect and serve the public, while working closely with all levels of local, state and federal law enforcement.
The Port Authority’s leadership is committed to changing the way this agency does business. As the Port Authority reshapes its security structure, leaders like Acting Chief of the Department Ryan will play a pivotal role in enhancing and innovating the PAPD.
