STATEMENT OF PORT AUTHORITY CHAIRMAN DAVID SAMSON ON THE APPOINTMENT OF LIEUTENANT JOHN RYAN AS ACTING CHIEF OF THE PAPD

The Port Authority Police Department has a long tradition of extraordinary, and at times heroic service, and the Department is an essential component of our ongoing commitment to provide safe and secure facilities. Any erosion of honor and responsibility demonstrates institutional, not just personal failings, and it must be remedied. Earlier this week, I directed senior leadership to take swift and immediate action to investigate these issues, to diagnose the conditions, and to make immediate and permanent changes as necessary within the PAPD. The appointment of Acting Chief of the Department Ryan makes it clear that substantial reforms have already begun and that the highest levels of professional standards will be maintained.
