Press Release Number: 93-2002
The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey will hold an Interfaith Remembrance Service at Riverside Church, 490 Riverside Drive in Manhattan, at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, September 11, 2002, to honor the 75 Port Authority employees and nine supplemental Port Authority staff who were killed on September 11, 2001, in the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center.
New York Governor George E. Pataki and New Jersey Governor James E. McGreevey will attend the service and offer words of comfort. The service will begin with the entrance of the Port Authority Police Pipe and Drum Band and Color Guard, and will include a roll call of the names of the fallen heroes of the Port Authority, a candle-lighting ceremony, readings by three Port Authority chaplains, and selections by the Riverside Church Choir. Christy Ferer and Linda Morrone – whose husbands, Port Authority Executive Director Neil D. Levin and Port Authority Police Superintendent Fred V. Morrone, were killed in the attacks – also will participate in the service.
In addition to the remembrance service, all Port Authority staff will observe two moments of silence on September 11, 2002, at 8:46 and 9:03 a.m., marking the time each of the Twin Towers was struck. Flags will be flown at half-staff at all Port Authority facilities for the week of September 9 in memory of the fallen heroes.
Media wishing to cover the Interfaith Remembrance Service at Riverside Church should bring photo identification as well as media credentials, and report to the church entrance at 91 Claremont Avenue near 120th Street.
Media also are invited to downlink the Port Authority’s live satellite feed of the service. Call 212 435-7777 for more information.
