Port Authority to provide parking discounts this week to accommodate travelers at JFK and Newark Liberty airports

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey is projecting that more than 7 million people will travel by air, car and rail at its facilities during the upcoming Independence Day holiday week, traditionally one of the busiest travel periods of the summer. The Port Authority will take proactive measures to ensure that travelers have a safe and enjoyable experience while using the agency's facilities. Customer assistance will be provided by Port Authority staff through website alerts, Twitter updates, online parking reservations and customer care representatives at the airports.

Beginning Tuesday, June 30, through Sunday, July 5, the agency forecasts more than 2 million passengers will use the Port Authority's aviation facilities - a 2.8 percent increase from last year's Fourth of July holiday period.

An estimated 1,035,000 passengers are expected to travel using John F. Kennedy International Airport. Travelers are encouraged to take advantage of AirTrain JFK, which connects all terminals with New York City Transit subways and buses and the Long Island Rail Road.

There will be approximately 458,000 passengers traveling through LaGuardia Airport. The Port Authority suggests those driving to the airport allow extra travel time due to limited parking.

Newark Liberty International Airport is projected to handle approximately 606,000 travelers. An estimated 4,880 passengers will travel out of Stewart International Airport during the holiday period. Atlantic City International Airport anticipates approximately 22,000 travelers during the holiday weekend.

With traffic volume expected to be higher than usual, motorists are encouraged to allow extra time to reach their destination. A full complement of toll collectors will be available to speed the flow of traffic through the toll plazas.

The Bayonne Bridge will remain open from 5 a.m. Thursday, July 2, through 9 a.m. Monday, July 6, to minimize impacts for holiday travelers. During the holiday weekend, the Bayonne Bridge shuttle bus will operate on the following schedule: 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

To commemorate the day, the world's largest free-flying American flag will be flown at the George Washington Bridge on Saturday, July 4.
