UPDATE BY THE PORT AUTHORITY OF NEW YORK AND NEW JERSEY ON AGENCY’S COORDINATION WITH NYC ON POSSIBLE TRANSIT STRIKE

The Port Authority is committed to working with agencies from New York State, New York City, and New Jersey to ensure the most effective and coordinated response in the event of a city transit strike.
Following discussions with New York City officials, the Port Authority will not restrict single-occupant vehicles or trucks from traveling on Interstate 95 via the George Washington Bridge in the event of a city transit strike.
However, the High Occupancy Vehicle requirements for passenger cars set up by New York City in the event of a strike will be enforced at the ramps leading from the New York side of the bridge into Manhattan. Passenger cars with fewer than four occupants will be allowed to use the George Washington Bridge to travel to points on the Interstate 95 corridor or into the Bronx. There are no truck restrictions on the George Washington Bridge.
New York City’s restrictions require at least four passengers in a car to enter Manhattan. The city also will ban trucks from entering Manhattan at the Lincoln and Holland tunnels between 6 a.m. and 10 a.m. Port Authority Police will strictly enforce these restrictions.
The Express Bus Lane at the Lincoln Tunnel – which now opens at 6:15 a.m. – will be opened earlier and remain open longer if bus traffic increases. Provisions have been made at the Port Authority Bus Terminal to handle additional buses if necessary. The Bus Terminal public parking lot will open at 4:30 a.m.
Additional weekday service will be provided on PATH during off-peak periods from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and from 7 p.m. to 1:30 a.m. to assist commuters traveling into, out of, or within Manhattan. Frequent service already is provided during peak periods. Travelers are strongly urged to buy QuickCards in advance to reduce delays at the fare turnstiles.
The Port Authority also is working closely with the airlines at the region’s three major airports to ensure that customers are provided with the most up-to-date information on how they can get to and from the airport. Taxis will be urged to allow shared rides if passengers do not object.
To provide additional information to customers, the Port Authority has set up two hotlines. For information on tunnel and bridge issues, customers can call 800 221-9903. For information on PATH service, customers can call 800 234-PATH.
The Port Authority strongly urges travelers who cannot carpool into Manhattan to use existing train, bus or ferry services. The Port Authority also urges employers to stagger the work hours of their employees to reduce congestion during peak travel periods.
The Port Authority will continue to provide updates as often as possible regarding service changes and activity at its facilities.
