PORT AUTHORITY ANNOUNCES SERIES OF ACTIVITIES TO MARK 2019 PRIDE MONTH

Date: Jun 10, 2019
Press Release Number: 90-2019

Participation highlights agency’s steadfast commitment to diversity and inclusion standards

As part of its ongoing efforts to set a global standard for diversity and inclusion, the Port Authority will celebrate 2019 Pride Month – which marks the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall riots – by hosting exhibits, rooftop films, interactive performances and participating in commemorative parades throughout the region.

Pride Month is celebrated annually in June and recognizes the influence of the LGBTQ+ community. This year, New York City is hosting WorldPride, the world’s largest pride celebration, to mark the 50th Anniversary of the Stonewall riots.

“We’ve been laser focused on developing an agency wide inclusion mindset that encompasses everything we do each day,” said Port Authority Chairman Kevin O’Toole. “From our hiring practices, which have resulted in nearly 50 percent of all new hires being minority candidates, to our support of employee resource groups like PA Pride, we will continue to foster a diverse and inclusive environment among our work force.”

“Diversity and inclusion is a key pillar of the Port Authority culture and values, and our focus this month on the LGBTQ+ community embodies our commitment to diversity and inclusion,” said Port Authority Executive Director Rick Cotton. “The establishment of our employee resource group PA Pride is critical to fostering an inclusive environment among our staff. We are proud to support PA Pride and all of our employee resource groups.”

One of the Port Authority’s signature Pride Month events will be held at LaGuardia Airport’s Marine Air Terminal rotunda on June 14, where an exhibit will be unveiled celebrating the history and movement of Gay Pride in Queens. The event will be open to the public.

At the World Trade Center, the Port Authority will host a variety of events and performances to mark Pride Month, including an interactive performance called “Pride in the Oculus” that will take place on June 26 from noon to 4 p.m. On June 27, Rooftop Films Pride Screening will be held in Liberty Park from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. And on June 29, a banner-making workshop titled LMCC Workshop on the Street will take place at the North Oculus Plaza from 1:30 p.m. to 4:30pm.

Throughout the month, Port Authority employees also will participate in several additional events and parades, including:

  • On June 20, Newark Liberty International Airport will host a “drag brunch,” the first of its kind, in the United Airlines Terminal C.
  • On June 28, the Port Authority will welcome special “Pride Flights” from American Airlines at LaGuardia Airport and Virgin at Newark Liberty International Airport.
  • On June 30, Port Authority employees will march along with New York Governor Andrew Cuomo’s staff in the New York City Pride Parade
